Do you love the dollar store as much as I do? My favourite dollar store is Dollarama. So much of what I used to buy at Michael’s or even Walmart I now buy at the dollarama. It’s especially great for craft supplies and glassware. So, when I decided to make a DIY dollar store centerpiece with vases and candles. Dollarama is where I went first.
Supplies
- Cylinder Vases
- Rhinestone Ribbon
- Metallic tape/Washi Tape
- Sheer embellished lace ribbon
- Hot Glue Gun
- Decorative Items (Keep reading)
Start with one of your glass cylinder vases. The ones I used here measure 3.5″ diameter and 9″ high. First give them a good wash, and remove labels. Did you know that Lysol Wipes are excellent for removing the sticky bits left-over from price tags? Yup. Oh ya baby, I have all the answers!! At least that’s what I tell my hubby 😉
Tape
The first step is to add a strip of the metallic tape around the top edge of the vase. I did mine 1″ from the top edge of the vase to the bottom edge of the tape. Use a Tape Measure to mark the distance from the top. The great part about using metallic tape, is that if you get it wrong, just lift and reapply! Don’t sweat it if it’s a little bit crooked 🙂 It’s not rocket science, were just making a pretty centerpiece for our table 🙂
Add another strip whatever distance you need depending on the width of your Rhinestone mesh. The mesh that I used came on a sheet and I cut it into 2.25″ wide strips. I left 2″ between the taped section, so that the mesh would slightly overlap the tape. Leave a bit of extra length (around the vase) until you glue it down as you can trim it up after it’s glued. Better to have it too long than too short!
Mesh
Use the hot glue gun to apply the rhinestone mesh onto the cylinder. Go very sparingly with the glue, or it will glop out between the mesh. Just use a very small amount along the edges, and a couple of vertical lines as well to keep it in place. Use the image below as a glue guide.
Then add another strip of the metallic tape around the bottom of the vase. I did mine 1″ up from the bottom.
Lace
And because it’s not quite there yet. I added a piece of embellished ribbon, which I also picked up at the dollar store . The ribbon is 4.25″ wide. As with the rhinestone mesh, go very sparingly with the glue. Just glue along the top and bottom edges and the seam. Try and line it up so that all of the seams fall on the same side of the cylinder.
